Note

  • Pre-cooked gnocchi: While this recipe works with pre-cooked gnocchi, for a richer flavor, consider making your own pillowy gnocchi from scratch. There are many tutorials online!
  • Gnocchi alternatives: If you can't find gnocchi, cavatappi, penne, or another small pasta shape can be used as a substitute. Adjust the cooking time according to the package instructions.

Meat Variations:

  • Ground turkey or chicken: Swap the ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option. Season accordingly with Italian seasoning or poultry seasoning.
  • Italian sausage: For a more intense flavor, try substituting half of the ground beef with ground Italian sausage. Drain any excess grease before adding the remaining ingredients.

Adding Veggies:

  • Diced vegetables: Feel free to add your favorite chopped vegetables like mushrooms, bell peppers, or onions for extra flavor and texture. Saute them with the ground beef before adding the remaining ingredients.
  • Spinach: For a healthy twist, incorporate a handful of chopped fresh spinach into the skillet a few minutes before serving.

Sauce Twists:

  • Spice it up: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or chili powder to the sauce for a touch of heat.
  • Creamier sauce: For an extra decadent dish, increase the heavy cream to 3/4 cup.
  • Tomato variation: Use diced tomatoes with their juices instead of tomato sauce for a chunkier texture.

Cheese Options:

  • Shredded cheese blend: Experiment with different cheese blends like mozzarella and cheddar, Monterey Jack and pepper jack, or Colby Jack for a variety of flavors.
  • Goat cheese: Crumble some goat cheese over the top of the finished dish for a tangy contrast.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Garnishes: Fresh chopped parsley, chives, or green onions add a pop of color and freshness.
  • Sides: Pair this skillet with a simple side salad, roasted vegetables, or garlic bread for a complete meal.

Leftovers:

  • This dish reheats well. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
