  1. Add the butter and oil to a pan over medium high heat and let the butter melt down. Place the onions in and add a bit of salt. Stir and fry until they begin cook and release water. Reduce the heat and continue to stir. Allow the onions to cook over low heat for about 20 minutes until caramalized. Set them aside in a bowl.

  2. Add a bit more oil to the same pan. Place the mushrooms in and allow them to fry until they begin to change color and release water. Add in the bell peppers. Stir and fry until they begin to soften. Once done, add them to the same bowl as the onions.

  3. Using the same pan, add in the ground beef and break it up. Season it with salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, paprika, and oregano. Stir and fry until the beef is cooked through.

  4. Using a sharp knife, carve out a hole in the center of the bread so it resembles a boat. I use the bread that I take out for bread crumbs. Scoop up some of the beef mixture and place into the hole in the bread followed by the mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers. Spread some cheese over the top. If you like you can sprinkle some dried basil over the cheese.

  5. Transfer the bread boat to a baking tray lined with aluminun foil. Place in a 375 degree F. preheated oven for 10 or 15 minutes until the cheese melts and the bread is toasted. Slice, serve, and enjoy your Cheesy Ground Beef Bread Boat with Caramelized Onion & Bell Peppers!

Note

✔️ Choosing the Right Bread – A French baguette or Italian loaf works best for this recipe, as they have a sturdy crust and soft interior. Avoid overly soft bread, as it may become too soggy when stuffed.

✔️ Caramelizing Onions Like a Pro – Low and slow is the key! Cook the onions over medium-low heat with a little butter or oil, stirring occasionally, until they turn a deep golden brown. This process enhances their natural sweetness and adds incredible depth of flavor.

✔️ Make It Spicy – If you love heat, add red pepper flakes, diced jalapeños, or a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture.

✔️ Customize Your Cheese – While cheddar, mozzarella, or provolone work great, feel free to experiment with Gouda, Monterey Jack, or Swiss for different flavor profiles.

✔️ Prevent a Soggy Bread Boat – To keep the bread from getting too soft, you can lightly toast the inside before adding the filling. Simply brush the hollowed-out bread with a little olive oil or melted butter and bake for 5 minutes at 375°F (190°C) before stuffing.

✔️ Make It a Complete Meal – Serve your bread boat with a side salad, roasted potatoes, or a warm bowl of soup for a well-rounded meal.

✔️ Meal Prep & Storage – This recipe is best enjoyed fresh, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. To reheat, wrap in foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes or until heated through. Avoid microwaving, as it may make the bread soggy.

✔️ Freezer-Friendly Option – If you want to prep ahead, prepare the beef mixture in advance and freeze it for up to 2 months. When ready to make, thaw it overnight in the fridge, reheat, and assemble your bread boat as usual.
