Homemade Donair Style Pizza

donair pizza

Everybody loves pizza. It's even better if it's homemade, especially if it has some pizzazz and a bit of a twist. This Donair style pizza is just that. This unique pizza is a maritime favourite. It's made with a combination of donair sauce, meat, fresh tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. Believe me, this pizza pops with flavour and freshness.

The donair sauce is unique in itself. You just can't beat a combination of evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and garlic. A touch of vinegar adds to its delicious thick viscosity.

Description

I was on the East Coast in PEI. Stopped by a little pizza shop and the girl at the counter suggested I try a donair pizza. I am always game for something new, so I gave it a try. Boy was I glad I did. It was one of the most delicious pizzas I have ever had. I came home, reproduced it, and it was an instant hit.

Ingredients
  • 1 large ball of pizza dough
  • 6 medium pieces of pastrami cut into squares
  • 2 cups grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 large tomato, diced
  • 1/2 small onion, diced
  • 2 large leaves of lettuce, shredded
  • For the Sauce
  • 140 milliliters 5 oz evaporated
  • 140 milliliters 5 oz of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/8 cup white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
  1. To Make the Sauce

Combine the evaporated milk, condensed milk, vinegar, and garlic powder in a mixing bowl. Whisk and allow it to sit for 5 minutes to thicken.

  2. For the Pizza
  3. Spray a pizza pan with oil. Place the ball of dough into the centre and push it out to the sides. Form the crust as you wish.

  4. Place some donair sauce into the centre and swirl it out to the edges. I don't add too much as it will become soggy.

  5. Place the mozzarella over followed by the meat.

  6. Place into a 450 degree F or 225 C preheated oven for about 11 minutes.

  7. Remove the pizza from the oven and spread the tomato, onion, and lettuce over the top. Drizzle more donair sauce over.

  8. Serve and enjoy your donair style pizza.

Note

Are use pastrami but traditional Donair pizza is made with ground beef. So, it's totally your call.

If you have leftover sauce, it's great for fries, salads, or just about anything.

You can make the pizza dough from scratch, but I find it's just as easy to buy the frozen bowls of pizza dough.
