Mexican Steak Tacos

My favorite midweek meal is taco Tuesday. The entire dish can be put together so quickly and the outcome is simply incredible. My taco Tuesday consists of a steak taco made with a decent cut of meat, taco shells, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, guacamole, and sometimes salsa sauce. Even the kids love it. You can also make extra and have it the next day for lunch.

Description

The dish is very similar to a Mexican tacos which is a street food, so I use some very traditional spices in the marinate for the meat such as chili powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, cumin, lime, olive oil, and smoked paprika. You can add other spices if you wish. For example, onion powder or cayenne pepper certainly would  not be out of place. The type of taco you use is entirely up to you. To keep it really traditional you can go to a Mexican deli or store and buy original Mexican tacos. Beware, these tacos are just loaded and bursting with flavor.

I always serve them up with a side dish of guacamole and salsa, but that is completely up to you.

Give them a try and, as always, let us know what you think.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound or 1/2 kilo of steak (use a fairly decent cut)
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 small lime
  • 1 lime cut into wedges
  • 4 six inch tortillas
  • 1/2 small chopped onion
  • 1/2 small chopped tomato
  • 3 teaspoons guacamole
  • 3 teaspoons salsa
Instructions
  1. Chop the steak finely against the grain and chop it the opposite way into bite size chunks.

  2. In a mixing bowl, add in in the olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, paprika, chilli powder, cumin, and lemon. Mix until well combined.

  3. Place the steak in and massage until the meat is completely covered.

  4. Let marinate for a few minutes or you can leave it over night.

  5. Add some oil to a pan and fry the steak, in batches, until it is cooked through and slightly seared.

  6. In a separate pan, heat the tortilla wrappers for a few minutes until heated through and slightly brown.

  7. Add some steak to the middle followed by onion, pepper, tomatoes, and cilantro.

  8. Spoon some guacamole over the top followed by a squeeze of lime.

  9. Serve and enjoy your Mexican steak tacos.
