Party Pizza Sticks – Friday’s Treat

pizza sticks
Everybody loves pizza. At least everybody that I know. But what about pizza made on a skewer or sometimes called pizza sticks. When I first heard of the idea, I thought that's an absurd concept, but when I made them I was shocked. I used sausage, pepperoni, cherry tomatoes, onions, and red bell peppers. Wrapped them in pizza dough, baked them, and they came out incredible. The idea didn't seem that absurd after all. After that, I presented the pizza sticks at a party and the crowd went wild. In other words, they were an absolute hit.

Ingredients
  • 2 large Italian sausages, cut into bite size chunks
  • 8 large button mushrooms, quartered
  • 1 medium onion, cut into bite size wedges
  • 1 large bell pepper, cut into chunks
  • 25 medium pieces of pepperoni, folded
  • 1 tablespoon oil for frying
  • 3/4 cups pizza sauce for dipping
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 3/4 cups mozzarella cheese, grated
  • 700 grams premade pizza dough
Instructions
  1. Add the oil to a pan over medium-high heat. Place the sausage in and fry until browned and cooked though. Set aside on a plate.

  2. Put the dough on a floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle less than 1/4 inch thick (about 12 inches by 16 inches). Using a pizza cutter, slice the dough into 1 inch sections.

  3. Using a metal or wooden skewer, put on a piece of sausage followed by a piece of mushroom, bell pepper, pepperoni, onion, and tomato. Repeat this process to fill the skewer. Take a strip of dough a pierce the one end with the skewer and wrap the dough around so the vegetables and meat peek through.

  4. Repeat this process for the rest of the skewers. This should give you about 6 pizza sticks.

  5. Sprinkle with basil and mozzarella. Place into a 400 degree F or 200 C oven for about 15 to 17 minutes.

  6. Serve with pizza sauce for dipping and enjoy your pizza sticks.
