Note

Make it ahead: Assemble the casserole in the morning, cover, and refrigerate until ready to bake. Add 10–15 minutes to the bake time if it’s coming straight from the fridge.

Swap the meat: Ground turkey, chicken, or even crumbled sausage works beautifully in place of ground beef.

Add more veggies: Toss in fresh chopped bell peppers, zucchini, or mushrooms for extra flavor and nutrition.

Boost the flavor: A splash of Worcestershire sauce, a pinch of red pepper flakes, or a little smoked paprika can deepen the taste.

Cheese choices: Cheddar is classic, but mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a blend can change the flavor profile.

Freezer-friendly: Assemble the casserole without baking, wrap well, and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before baking.

Crispy topping option: For extra crunch, top with buttered breadcrumbs or crushed crackers during the last 10 minutes of baking.

Portion control: This recipe makes generous servings — perfect for a crowd or leftovers the next day.
