Mozzarella sticks are a great appetizer. They are relatively simple to make and are often an instant hit at parties or gatherings. I usually serve mine up with a marinara sauce which you can make from scratch or buy at your local supermarket. You can also use your favorite condiment such as chili sauce or Ketchup.
When making this recipe, I usually buy a block or mozzarella. You can search your supermarket for precut strips which do really well, too. The breading is simple but nice. If you like extra spices or herbs, feel free to add them. At times, I have added a bit of onion powder which makes a nice touch. Of course, if you are a garlic lover, feel free to add a little more. I have suggested using alternate hands when dredging the stick. This technique really helps to keep all of the ingredients in the station clean.
It is critical to place the mozzarella sticks in the freezer and make sure they are completely frozen. If you don’t do this, you will have a difficult time frying them. I suggest leaving them in overnight, but you can get away with 6 or seven hours. These stick freeze nicely. In light of this, you can make up a bunch, freeze them, and use them a few days or weeks later.
I use vegetable oil to fry them – preferably Crisco. Make sure the oil is at 350 degrees. I usually use a meat thermometer to make sure the oil is, and remains, at temperature. You can use any thermometer that will got to that temperature, however. Fry the mozzarella stick for about 2 minutes only or until they are golden brown. Actually, a bit of cheese will start to ooze out of the sticks, and that is completely normal. Be careful not to over fry them or you will end up with a mess.
