To Make the Mashed

  1. Add the potatoes to a pot of boiling salted water and cook until fork tender. This should take about 8 to 12 minutes.Β

  2. Add in the butter, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mash until smooth. Set aside to keep warm.Β

If the potatoes are not as creamy as desired, add in a bit more milk.

To Make the Ground Beef

  1. Add the oil to a pan over medium high heat. Place the beef in and fry until browned. Move the beef to one side of the pan and add in the garlic and onion. Saute until fragrant - about 2Β  minutes.Β

  2. Add in the flour and stir for a couple of minutes until the flour is mixed and cooked through. Pour in the beef stock and stir. Add in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and mixed vegetables. Stir until well combined. Allow to simmer for 3 or 4 minutes.Β

  3. Serve over the mashed potatoes and enjoy your budget ground beef and gravy over mashed.Β

Note

  • Meat Options: You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or ground chicken for a lighter version of this dish.

  • Vegetables: Add extra nutrition by including diced onions, carrots, peas, or mushrooms to the ground beef as it cooks. SautΓ© them until tender before adding the beef.

  • Gravy Thickness: If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can add an extra tablespoon of flour or cornstarch to the mixture. If it’s too thick, simply thin it out with a bit more broth or water.

  • Seasoning: Customize the flavor by adding your favorite herbs and spices. Try thyme, rosemary, etc. for an extra depth of flavor.

  • Mashed Potatoes: For creamier mashed potatoes, use a combination of butter, cream, and a bit of cream cheese. Make sure to mash them until smooth for the best texture.

  • Serving Suggestions: This dish pairs well with a simple side salad or steamed green vegetables like broccoli or green beans.

  • Leftovers: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a bit of milk or broth to loosen the gravy if needed.

  • Freezing: Both the ground beef and gravy mixture and the mashed potatoes can be frozen separately for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

  • Low-Sodium Option: Use low-sodium beef broth and reduce the amount of added salt to make this recipe more heart-friendly.

  • Gluten-Free: To make this recipe gluten-free, use cornstarch instead of flour to thicken the gravy and ensure that all other ingredients, such as the broth, are labeled gluten-free.

  • Extra Creamy Potatoes: For an extra creamy texture, consider using a potato ricer or food mill instead of a traditional masher.

  • Flavor Boost: For a richer flavor, brown the beef until it has a nice sear before proceeding with the rest of the recipe.

  • Presentation: Garnish with fresh chopped parsley or chives for a pop of color and added freshness.
