  1. Add the butter and oil to a pan over medium low heat. Place the onions in and fry, stirring occasionally, until browned and caramelized. This will take about 20 to 25 minutes. When done, remove and place in a bowl.

  2. While the onions are frying, add the ground beef to a mixing bowl. Add in the salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Using your hands or a spoon mix until well combined.

  3. Pick up a handful of the mixture, place it in the palm of your hands, and form it into a ball. Place the ball in the same pan as the onions and using a flat object such as an egg flipper, press down until a large burger shape forms. Fry on one side until browned, flip, and fry on the other side. Place the patties on a plate.

  4. Wipe the pan out and place the remaining butter in. Add the first slice of bread in. Follow this by two slices of cheese, the burger patty, mayo, half the onions, two more slices of cheese, and the top piece of bread. Fry on one side until browned. Flip to the other side and fry until browned and the cheese melts.

  5. Place, slice, and serve your epic patty melts. Enjoy!

Note

  1. The Patty: When forming your beef patty, be gentle with the meat. Overhandling can result in a tough texture. Season the patty generously with salt, pepper, and any desired spices for added flavor.

  2. Cheese Choices: While this video features Swiss cheese, feel free to experiment with other cheese varieties like cheddar or pepper jack for unique flavor profiles.

  3. Bread Selection: The choice of bread can significantly impact the final taste and texture of your Patty Melt. Rye bread is traditional, but sourdough or a rustic white bread can also work wonderfully.

  4. Toasting Technique: Toast the bread in a separate pan with a bit of butter for that golden, crispy exterior. This extra step ensures a perfect contrast to the tender patty.

  5. Onions: Caramelizing onions can be time-consuming, so if you're in a rush, you can opt for raw onions for a crunchier texture. If you're using caramelized onions, be patient - slow-cooking them on low heat is key to achieving that sweet, jammy consistency.

  6. Assembly: When assembling your Patty Melt, layer it thoughtfully. Start with the bread, add the cheese, then the patty, onions, and a generous dollop of secret sauce. The cheese helps hold everything together.
